Ballet Northeast was established in 1984 as the performing company in residence at the Degnan Ballet Center by Peter and Kristin Degnan, Rudolf Schleich and George Babcock. The Degnan’s served as co-artistic directors, until Peter’s death in 1999 when Kristin assumed sole artistic directorship. For over a quarter of a century, the Company has developed an impressive repertoire of classical ballets while also mounting local premieres of original works by prominent choreographers.
Ballet Northeast relocated to Wilkes-Barre to continue working closely with Degnan Ballet Center now located at the Conservatory at Wilkes University. Training is conducted from the classical tradition of Russia’s Kirov Ballet with the goal of cultivating healthy self-esteem and personal and artistic maturity.
The primary instructors of the Degnan Ballet Center are members of the Artistic Staff of Ballet Northeast.
To maintain a dance company rooted in classical ballet, which provides young dancers, regardless of studio or school affiliation, with regular opportunities to perform in authentically staged major company productions, in association with prominent guest professional artists; and, to nurture in our regional audiences, a broader and deeper appreciation of ballet, the liveliest of the performing arts. To this end, Ballet Northeast strives for excellence in the artistry and technique of company members as well as outreach and community service to fulfill its vision for the cultural enrichment of the lives of area residents.
